1. Museo Militar El Zapote

A military museum with real aircraft, helicopters, tanks, and historical exhibits. Kids absolutely love being up close to this huge historical vehicles. 2. Parque Balboa

A classic weekend destination for San Salvador families. Sitting at a higher elevation, the park offers slightly cooler temperatures, wide green areas, walking trails, children´s play areas and great picnic spots. Entrance is free but parking does have a flat fee of $2. You can bring your own snacks to make the visit extra cheap but you may want to spend some money on a snack from one of the many venders throughout the park or get some pupusas from the pupusodromo (area with many pupusa restaurants) at the park entrance.
⏰ Hours: Open daily from 6am to 10pm (note that the parking lot doesn´t open until 8am)
3. Parque Bicentenario


📍 Avenida Jerusalén in San Salvador — View on Google Maps
One of the largest green spaces in the metro area and a great free option for families. Popular for hiking, cycling, picnics, and wildlife spotting. You can rent bikes for free near the south parking lot. (Note they do not have young kid bikes, the smallest would probably work for about an 8-10 year old). The park also has movies daily at the outdoor movie theatre, the first showing is usually at about 4pm and geared towards younger kids (later showings have more mature movies). 4. Parque El Principito

A small, charming park beloved by local families. It has an area dedicated to celebrating the beloved children´s story The Little Prince featuring statues of many of the main characters of the book. They have an area with multiple playground features and some nice biking/walking trails around the park. These trails can actually go all the way up to connect with Parque Bicentenario. By the parking lot is an area which sells yummy snacks in the evenings. Many families come to visit the park on weekend evenings when the food venders are in full swing. Parking fee is $1.

5. Parque Cuscatlán

A beautifully renovated urban park in the capital. Wide walking paths, green areas, frequent cultural events, and plenty of room for kids to run around — all free. A great spot to experience everyday San Salvador life. There is a fountain feature which kids can run through (if you have a swimsuit!) that turns on at 10am. There is also a bebeteca (young child learning center) which is free and opens at 10am. Often they have activies on the platforms outside, or in their learning space building. Parking is free along the street, or you can park for a fee at the Tin Marin, which is the local children´s museum and another awesome space to visit. 6. National Library of El Salvador (BINAES)


📍 Historic Center of San Salvador — View on Google Maps
El Salvador’s most modern library — and much more than just books. Children’s spaces, reading areas, interactive technology like tablet areas, virtual reality, robotics, video games, as well as regular cultural programming make this one of the best free indoor options for kids in the city. Great for a rainy day.

7. Play Area at Multiplaza

A free indoor play area inside one of the area’s main malls. Actually there are three, you can visit the food court for two additional playspaces besides the dinsoaur area. Handy when the weather isn’t cooperating, and easy to combine with lunch nearby. Note that many of these free spaces do not open until 10am. Don’t forget socks or you won’t be able to enter!

8. Play Area at Las Cascadas

📍 Ciudad Merliot — View on Google Maps
A popular free play areas for kids near San Salvador. Located just above the food court it makes for an easy, low-key afternoon. Note that you need socks to get in, and it is for kids from 4 to 10 years old.
⏰ Hours: Tuesday – Sunday open 10am -6pm, Closing for lunch from 1-2pm.
9. Complejo Deportivo Banco Cuscatlán

A large free outdoor sports complex used by families for walking, jogging, bike rides, and general recreation. It has cement paths that are good for bike riding or stroller walks. Note that the playground equipment has seen better days and that it can be muddy in the rainy season. A good option if your kids need space to burn off some energy. Free street parking.

10. El Cafetalón

A large complex in Santa Tecla with sports facilities, trails, and open green spaces that are free to enjoy. There is a new playground area for younger kids. There is a walking / biking path that goes around the perimiter of the park which is very popular for roller skating, bike riding and walking. Parking fee is $.50 the hour.
Note: the aquatic center has a separate admission fee, but the outdoor areas are open at no cost.
