Things to Do in Olocuilta with Kids: Pupusas and a Free Ecological Park

Most visitors know Olocuilta for one thing: pupusas.
Located just 30 minutes from San Salvador and along the route to El Salvador International Airport, Olocuilta is famous for its rice flour pupusas and is a popular stop for both locals and tourists. But many families don’t realize that Olocuilta is home to a beautiful ecological park with playgrounds, picnic areas, and inexpensive swimming pools — making it one of the best budget-friendly outings near San Salvador.

Start with Mini Pupusas
No visit to Olocuilta is complete without pupusas.
For a fun family picnic, pick up some mini pupusas from one of the roadside vendors. These pupusas are about the size of your palm and are perfect for kids, they cost just $1 for five! We got some in a combo of three bean and two cheese. Take them to go and enjoy them at the park. Or you can sit and enjoy your pupusas at one of the many pupuserias in town, two of our favorite places are listed below.

Parque Ecológico de Olocuilta

Just a few minutes from the pupuserías is Parque Ecológico de Olocuilta, a peaceful green space that offers plenty for families.
Hours: Open daily, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Free Park Admission
Entrance to the park is completely free. Parking costs $0.25 per hour, making this one of the most affordable family outings near the capital — right up there with the free family-friendly spots near San Salvador we’ve rounded up on the blog.
Playground and Picnic Areas
The park features:
- Swings
- Climbing structures
- Open grassy areas

One of the highlights of the park is its pool area.

During our visit, the pools were clean and well maintained.

For many families, an entire morning at the park costs just a few dollars. If your kids love pools and outdoor play, also check out our guide to Parque Recreativo Atecozol — another great affordable option with pools not too far away.

Staff will even deliver the food directly to the pool area.
Where to Eat Pupusas in Olocuilta

1. Pupuserías El Triángulo de Olocuilta
Carr. Antigua a Zacatecoluca Km 22, Olocuilta | Open daily 7:30 AM – 9:00 PM
This is our personal favorite.
Unlike many restaurants that cook pupusas on metal griddles, El Triángulo still prepares its pupusas on traditional clay comales. This method produces less greasy pupusas and gives them a flavor and texture that many Salvadorans consider the authentic, traditional style. The picture above shows a traditional comal using firewood. Though this is actually a picture of tortillas.
With more than 1,100 reviews and a 4.4-star rating, it remains one of the most popular places to eat in Olocuilta.
2. Pupusódromo El Manguito
HV7M+F9G, PAZ 38, Olocuilta | Open daily 6:20 AM – 8:30 PM
If you like variety, El Manguito is a great option.
This popular pupusa complex contains many individual vendors, allowing visitors to sample different styles and flavors. With more than 7,000 reviews, it is one of the best-known food destinations in Olocuilta — and a favorite stop for families arriving from or heading to the airport.
Why Families Will Love Olocuilta
Most people stop in Olocuilta just for the pupusas. But with a free ecological park, playgrounds, swimming pools, and affordable food, it’s worth planning a little extra time to explore.
Next time you’re heading to or from the airport, consider turning your pupusa stop into a fun and inexpensive family adventure.
