If you’re looking for a different place to visit with kids in El Salvador, the Laguna de Alegría is definitely worth considering.

Known as the “Emerald of the Americas” for its incredible turquoise color, this lagoon sits inside an active volcanic crater 🌋 and offers a very different experience from other destinations in the country.

But the big question is:
👉 Is it a good place to visit with kids?

Here’s everything you need to know 👇

👨‍👩‍👧 Is Laguna de Alegría worth visiting with kids?

Yes… but with a few important considerations.

The lagoon is a peaceful, natural, and spacious place where kids can explore, walk around, and enjoy the outdoors. It’s not a structured park, but that’s part of its charm.

✔️ Lots of open space to move around
✔️ Relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere
✔️ Areas to rest with shade and hammocks 🌴

⚠️ Things to keep in mind:

  • There isn’t any playground-style infrastructure
  • The shores are rocky
  • Kids always need close supervision near the water

👉 In short: it’s ideal if you’re looking for a more relaxed, nature-based outing.

📍 Location and how to get there

The lagoon is located in the town of Alegría, Usulután, a mountain destination known for its cool weather 🍃

🚗 Distance from San Salvador: approximately 2.5 to 3 hours

Follow google maps and you won´t get lost.

🛣️ Access:
The final stretch of the road is unpaved, but its a fairly flat cobblestone road, there aren’t many potholes and you can get there in almost any vehicle. You don’t need a 4×4.

💰 Prices and entrance

  • Entrance: $1.25 per adult
  • Children under 7: free
  • Parking: $1

💙 Why is the water turquoise?

The lagoon’s stunning color comes from its volcanic origin 🌋 and high concentration of minerals and sulfur.

In fact, there are no fish in the lagoon because of the high sulfer content.

Some people also visit to bathe in the water because of the possible skin benefits of sulfur.

🏊‍♀️ Can you swim in Laguna de Alegría?

Yes, you can swim in the lagoon. When we visited, there were many families enjoying the water.

⚠️ Important tips:

  • Always supervise children
  • Be careful around the rocky areas
  • ❌ Do not drink the water
  • If your kids have sensitive skin or skin conditions, it’s best to avoid swimming
  • The sulfur smell can stay on your skin, and there are no fresh-water showers

👃 Does it smell like sulfur?

Yes… but not everywhere.

Some areas have a stronger smell, but you can walk around and find spots where it’s barely noticeable.

🌴 Atmosphere and what to expect

Laguna de Alegría is becoming more popular, but it still has a very natural, laid-back vibe.

You’ll find:

  • Families spending the day
  • People camping ⛺
  • Areas with hammocks and pine trees 🌴
  • A soccer field ⚽
  • Plenty of space to relax

🚻 Available facilities

This is something that has improved a lot in recent years:

✔️ Several bathroom areas

  • They are basic and require a small fee
  • But they have water, soap, and toilet paper

✔️ Small vendors

  • Coffee ☕
  • Ice cream 🍦
  • Snacks

👉 Still, it’s best to bring your own food if you plan to stay for several hours.

🍉 What to bring (especially with kids)

  • Plenty of water
  • Food / picnic (you can even make a fire and cook)
  • Water shoes (for the rocks)
  • Change of clothes
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen

✨ Our experience

I hadn’t visited the lagoon in about 15 years, and there have been several changes.

There used to be no vendors or bathrooms. It’s now a bit more developed for tourism, but still quite rustic.

The lagoon has kept its charm, and even though we didn’t go swimming, walking along the shore and enjoying the scenery was definitely worth it.

If you’re looking for a different plan—slow-paced, surrounded by nature and beauty—we definitely recommend this as a family outing.

🏨 Where to stay

If you plan to stay overnight in the area and don’t want to camp, we stayed at the Hotel Tekapa, and we highly recommend it.

✔️ Clean rooms
✔️ Breakfast included
✔️ Beautiful views

They also offer cabins with two bedrooms, and in that area there’s even a nice playground for kids.

You can make your reservations here.
