A Weekend Trip Guide to Alegría, El Salvador with kids: What to Do, Eat & Where to Stay

If you’re looking for a cool-weather escape with the kids that doesn’t require a long flight, Alegría, Usulután might just be your new favorite weekend destination. This charming little pueblito tucked into the mountains of eastern El Salvador is exactly the kind of place that surprises you — lush, breezy, beautiful, and wonderfully easy to explore with little ones in tow. We packed up the family (kids ages 3 and 6) and headed out for a quick overnight trip, and honestly? We didn’t want to leave.

Getting There

From San Salvador, Alegría is roughly a 2.5-hour drive. We left early in the morning and arrived just in time for lunch, which worked perfectly. The road winds up into the mountains and the temperature starts to drop. Pack some snacks for the kids and enjoy the scenery. There are a few viewpoints to stop at on the way to strech your legs and admire the view.

🍽️ Where to Eat

Finca San Rafael — Lunch Stop (Day 1)

Our first stop in Alegría was Finca San Rafael, and what a way to start the trip. This restaurant is absolutely packed with photo opportunities — there’s even a vintage car parked out that the kids imediatly wanted a photo with. But the real stars? The animals. Horses, donkeys, a goat, geese… and a four-week-old baby pony being bottle-fed. My kids were completely in their element.

Beyond the animals, Finca San Rafael has beautiful walking paths through nature, little corners with picnic tables, hammocks strung between trees, a small playground with a swing and trampoline, and sweeping mountain views. The food was genuinely delicious. It had decent prices, a small kids’ menu with the classics (yes, french fries), and a relaxed vibe that makes you want to linger for hours. On weekends and evenings, the horses sometimes perform too — a little equestrian show right there at the table. We even bought some coffee beans that where produced right on site!

💡 Kid-friendly rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — This place was made for families.

Ecoparque Vivero Cartagena — Dinner Stop (Day 1)

For dinner, we headed to Ecoparque Vivero Cartagena, which has a really sweet setup: a main restaurant area, a charming little café that makes its own desserts and serves coffee, and a small farm area past the café with ducks, roosters, hens, parrots, rabbits, and turkeys. While we waited for our food, the kids ran around seeing all the animals and hit the playground and swings. The mountain views here are beautiful too.

We went for pupusas and they hit the spot. The café section is a great way to end the evening — grab a dessert and a coffee while the kids wind down. They also have cabins and trails if you’re looking to stay there instead of in town.

💡 Kid-friendly rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Great combo of food, animals, and play.

Other Dining Options

Alegría’s Parque Central area has several food vendors and small restaurants where you can grab snacks, local bites, and artisanal treats. It’s a great option if you want something quick and casual, and very walkable from most hotels in town. It is also just a nice walk to see more of the local and less touristy scene.

Finca Margarita is another lovely option very close to the Parque Central. It has a restaurant, café, great views and photo oportunities, ATV tours, plus their brand-new Laberinto de las Mariposas (Butterfly Maze), reportedly the largest maze in El Salvador! The café is especially praised for its on-site grown coffee and desserts.

🏨 Where to Stay

Hotel Tekapa ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hotel Tekapa Alegría El Salvador

We stayed at Hotel Tekapa, and it was a great choice for families. The hotel offers both standard rooms and cabins — we opted for the cabins for the extra space. Our cabin had two rooms with a shared bathroom and four queen beds, giving everyone plenty of room to spread out and sleep comfortably.

The cabin area is across the street from the main hotel building, in the cabin area there is a lot of green space and has a very nice kids’ playground — a thoughtful touch that kept the kids happy the moment we arrived. There was a fire pit and grills which would have been a fun activity if we had been able to stay an additional night. The surroundings are beautiful with mountain views, and everything felt well-maintained and carefully cared for.

One of our favorite perks? Free breakfast included. When you have hungry little ones who wake up early and ready to eat, there is nothing more convenient than a Salvadoran breakfast ready for you — eggs, beans, plátanos, bread. Staying at Hotel Tekapa in town also means you can walk almost everywhere — we strolled to dinner and back, wandered through the park, and woke up already in the heart of Alegría.

💡 Kid-friendly rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Spacious cabins, playground on site, free breakfast included. A family win.

If you’re looking for a more nature-immersed experience, Finca Rauda also has beautiful cabins. See the Things to Do section below for more details.

🗺️ Things to Do

Laguna de Alegría

The Laguna de Alegría is one of the town’s crown jewels — a stunning volcanic lagoon with striking turquoise-green water. We’ve actually done a full reel on this one, so check that out for a better look! It’s a must-visit and very doable with kids. Entrance fee: ~$1.25. Here is an article with more information.

Parque Central & Walking the Town

One of our favorite simple pleasures of the trip was just walking through Alegría. The town is small, the streets are charming, and everything feels unhurried. We walked from our hotel to the Parque Central, browsed the little shops selling artesanías and snacks, and simply enjoyed the mountain air. It’s the kind of town where slowing down feels right.

Mirador de Cien Gradas

The Mirador de Cien Gradas is just a couple of blocks from the Parque Central and is a popular viewpoint worth adding to your list — 100 steps up to a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole town. When we visited it was under renovation — the construction workers we talked to said it’s going to be even more beautiful when it’s done. Keep an eye on this one!

Finca Rauda (On Our List for Next Time!)

Finca Rauda is one of the most talked-about destinations near Alegría — a stunning mountain eco-park with lush coffee plantations, scenic miradores, zip lines, giant swings, a cable bridge, ATV rides, hiking trails, and cabins for overnight stays. It sits at 4,100 feet above sea level, so the views are breathtaking. You can also bring your own food or dine at their restaurant. We chose not to visit this trip — with a 3 and 6-year-old and limited time, we didn’t feel we’d make the most of it. The entrance fee is $4.00 for adults, $3 for kids and under 5 is free. But it’s absolutely on our radar for a future trip as the kids grow. If a mountain retreat sounds like your thing, you can book a cabin here.

Practical Tips for Families

  • 🌤️ Weather: Alegría is noticeably cooler than the lowlands — bring a light jacket, especially for evenings and mornings.
  • 👟 Shoes: Wear comfortable walking shoes. The town is very walkable but has some uneven cobblestone streets.
  • 🚗 Getting there: Self-driving is the easiest option with kids. The drive is scenic and about 2.5 hours from San Salvador. It is a one lane road so sometimes you get stuck behind a slow truck and traffic happens.
  • 💰 Budget: Alegría is very affordable. Most activities and meals are reasonably priced, with the exception of Finca Rauda which has a slightly higher entrance fee.
  • 📅 Best time to visit: Weekends can be busier. A Saturday-Sunday overnight works great, but if you have time on a weekday things will be less full/busy in general.

Alegría completely won us over. It’s one of those places that feels like a well-kept secret — small enough to feel intimate, beautiful enough to be unforgettable, and relaxed enough to actually rest. If you haven’t taken your family yet, add it to the list. You won’t regret it. 💚
