✈️ A Family Adventure at El Salvador’s National Aviation Museum (Museo Nacional de Aviación de El Salvador)

If your kids love airplanes, helicopters, or anything that flies, the National Aviation Museum (Museo Nacional de Aviación de El Salvador) in Ilopango, San Salvador is a fun spot for your next family outing. It’s one of those hidden gems that surprises both children and adults — educational, fun, and very affordable!

What You’ll Find There

The museum is packed with fascinating pieces of El Salvador’s aviation history.

To get there, you’ll drive toward the Ilopango Airport and enter through the Fuerza Aérea de El Salvador gates. At the entrance, simply tell the soldiers that you’re visiting the museum—they’ll kindly give you directions to park and wait for your guide. Since the museum is located inside a military area, the guide will accompany you during your entire visit (they’re very friendly and full of interesting information!).

Your tour begins outdoors among the large aircraft and helicopters, perfect for photos and exploring up close. Then you’ll head inside the old Ilopango Airport, which once served as the country’s main airport. The original lobby is quite impressive—it even has a natural echo that was used back in the day to announce arriving and departing flights before any electronic sound systems existed!

Around the lobby, you’ll find several rooms filled with aviation and military exhibits. There are model planes, historical uniforms, old navigation tools, and even a vintage night-vision camera and control panel from early aircraft—small details that fascinate both kids and adults.

Upstairs, the fun continues as you step into the cockpit of a helicopter and two different airplanes. Kids love pressing the buttons, pretending to be pilots, and imagining take-off! From this level, you also get a nice view of the runway, and depending on the time of day, you might see small planes taking off or landing.

On average, plan to spend about 1 to 1.5 hours exploring everything—it’s an easy, unique, and educational outing that the whole family will enjoy.
