Museo Militar El Zapote with Kids: A Unique Family Outing in San Salvador

Museum Entrance
If you’re looking for a fun and educational family outing in San Salvador, the Museo Militar El Zapote with kids is an excellent choice. Combining history, outdoor spaces, and impressive visual exhibits, this museum captures the attention of both adults and children.
We visited on a Sunday morning and had a great experience. Right before entering, we noticed a huge 3D relief map of El Salvador. I was fascinated by the detailed geography, while the kids took one quick look before running off excitedly to see the tanks.
What to See at Museo Militar El Zapote with Kids
Located inside the historic El Zapote military barracks, the museum offers both indoor galleries and a large outdoor exhibition area that kids especially enjoy.

Highlights for Families:
- 🚁 Real military vehicles: The outdoor area features tanks, planes, helicopters, and trucks. While visitors can’t climb inside, these vehicles are close enough to explore up close and take memorable photos.
- 🛝 Swings in the garden: Near the airplanes, there’s a small playground with swings—perfect for letting kids play after exploring.
- 🧒 Children’s playroom (Ludoteca): Ask the staff at the entrance and they can open a special interactive room designed just for kids, helping them learn about history in a fun, hands-on way.
- 🎖️ Indoor exhibits: Inside, you’ll find uniforms, old photos, medals, and models. While younger children might not spend much time here, some visual displays still capture their interest. My two year old was also a bit scared of the costumed mannequins, so take note!
- 🍧 Snacks and artisanal sorbet: The museum has a small cafeteria, and right outside the entrance is a shop selling delicious artisanal sorbet—a perfect treat after your visit.
Visitor Tips
- 🕘 Visit in the morning for fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.
