👨‍👩‍👧 What is it like visiting Laguna de Apastepeque with kids?

Laguna de Apastepeque with kids

Visiting Apastepeque with kids is a simple but enjoyable experience—great for a change of scenery and a relaxed family day.

It’s not a modern park or full of attractions, but it has what you need to enjoy a different kind of outing.

✔️ It’s affordable
✔️ There’s space for kids to move around
✔️ You get both a pool and nature

⚠️ Things to keep in mind:
• There is only one pool, and it’s small
• On busy days (especially weekends), it can get crowded
• The experience can vary depending on the day and number of visitors

🌊 What is the lake like?

Laguna de Apastepeque is of volcanic origin. It’s smaller than some other lakes, but very beautiful.

👉 Important things to know:

• The water is natural (not treated)
• There can be algae or aquatic vegetation (when we went, there was quite a bit, which made the water look a little green)
• You can see fish 🐟

We saw people (including kids) swimming in the lake, and it is allowed.

We personally chose not to swim much because of the vegetation, but you can definitely wade in near the shore and explore.

💡 Tip: water shoes can be really helpful.

🏊 Pool and park areas

In addition to the lake, the park has:

• One swimming pool
• Picnic areas (you can bring your own food)
• A boardwalk for walking
• A floating dock
• Bathrooms, showers, and changing areas

💡 Important:
The pool is small, so on weekends or busy days it can fill up quickly.

🍽️ Food: what to know before you go

This is important for planning your visit:

👉 Inside the park:
• There is a small snack stand or café
• When we visited (on a weekday), they were only selling drinks and snacks, not full meals

👉 Outside the park:
• There are several restaurants right next to the entrance
• There are also small shops selling:

  • floaties
  • swimsuits
  • snacks and drinks

💡 The best part:
You can leave and re-enter with your receipt, so you’re not limited to eating inside and could even drive to a different part of the lake to try a different restaurant and still go back.

🚫 Alcoholic beverages are not allowed inside the park, which helps keep a family-friendly environment.

🚤 The highlight: The boat ride

This was definitely our favorite part of the visit 😄

There are small boats available—just ask the operators by the dock. If you fill the boat (around 6–8 people), it can cost as little as $1 per person.

👉 What is the ride like?

It starts off calm as you go around the lake, seeing restaurants, fishermen, and different areas. Toward the end, the driver adds some fun with waves, turns, and speed 😄

It’s a simple activity but really fun for both kids and adults.

🚗 Parking

• Parking lots are located just outside the park
• There is an additional fee (around $1)

💵 Prices and hours

👉 Entrance:
• Locals: $1.50
• Foreigners: $3.00

🕒 Hours:
• Monday to Sunday
• 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

💡 Tips for visiting Laguna de Apastepeque with kids

• Go early to avoid crowds
• If possible, visit on a weekday
• Bring food or plan to eat outside
• Bring bug spray just in case
• Bring water shoes
• Always supervise children near the lake

Visiting Laguna de Apastepeque with kids is an affordable and different way to spend the day as a family.
